What is the Fediverse?

“The Fediverse is a giant decentralized or “federated” network of social media services owned and moderated by the people, consisting of mostly free software. There are platforms for microblogging, blogging, photoblogging, videohosting and much more and they are all interconnected. So you only need one account to follow users on any of the platforms.”

The Fediverse (commonly shortened to ‘The Fedi’) is a collection of online social networking services that can communicate with each other using a common protocol. It enables users of different online spaces to send and receive posts, multimedia files and other data across different platforms.

The majority of Fediverse platforms are based on free and open-source software, and create connections between servers using the ActivityPub protocol. These include Mastodon, PixelFed, PeerTube, Friendica, Lemmy, Diaspora, WriteFreely and many others. Check out this Wikipedia article for more info.
